How I Lost Roughly $17,000

I was first introduced to the concept of "Virtual Real Estate" (i.e. buying and selling websites) by accident. I started internet marketing full time back in early 2006. Things were going well. My website (my only website at the time) was pulling in nearly $2,000 per month! For someone who was relatively new to this whole thing, that wasn't too shabby if I say so myself.

The site was simple too. I sold an electronic book that customers could download as a PDF file after their purchase for $67. With little marketing, the product quickly picked up speed and gained some affiliates. Before long the income was completely autopilot! Life was good...

The problem was that I still had a semester left in College, and had already gotten engaged to my wife at that point...Weddings aren't cheap, and $2,000 per month isn't a lot to live on. Needless to say, it also doesn't afford you the opportunity to save much at the end of each month!

So, being in a pinch, with bills backing me up into a corner, and needing a chunk of money badly to fight them off, I decided I would attempt to sell my beloved website for some immediate money, and then work on building another one. I figured if I could get the next one up and rolling before the proceeds of the sale for the current site had run dry, things would be great...A novel idea, right?

The next day I went to SitePoint.com, the web's most popular market place for buying and selling websites, to list my prized money maker for sale. This was the first ebusiness I had ever sold, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I set the "Buy It Now" at $3,500 which was about exactly what I needed to pay for all the stuff on my plate at the time.

Much to my surprise, the site sold for the "Buy It Now" price of $3,500 within 15 minutes!

The bad news is, when I did a quick market sweep to see if other sites were selling that easily, I learned why it had sold so fast...

I UNDER SOLD IT BY NEARLY $17,000!!!

Imagine the horrible sinking feeling that hit my gut! Who knew that websites were worth so much! As it turned out, I could have easily sold that website for 10 X the monthly revenue of $2,000...Bringing the sale price to $20,000!

You can imagine the first thought that hit my mind as soon as I finished throwing up after realizing I had just missed out on $17K...

It's Time To Build Another Site Like That One, And Sell It For The Right Price!

After all, I had the internet marketing stuff down pretty good. So I did just that. I created another simple ebusiness and sold it off for several thousands of dollars in the matter of a few months. It actually turned into a systematic process, and the monthly revenue from my one site that made about $2,000 was a thing of the past for me. I began having $20K months! And it was just a matter of building the businesses, and selling them off as established, ready made money makers.

Contrast that with slowly making a little money each day over a month...You can do a lot more with a pile of money, can't you?

The guy who bought my original site that sold an ebook for $67 was the smart one. He saw that there was room to further monetize that site. I later found out that he had raised the price of the product from $67 to $297! And the sick thing was, it was selling like hot cakes at that price. He changed a few elements to the sales copy, raised the price, and put a little work into the marketing of the site in ways that at that time I didn't know how to do, and bam! He instantly made back the money he spent on that site. For all I know, he turned around and sold it again for $100K or more!

He didn't create the product...

He didn't create the sales page (most of it)...

He simply took an existing product and made it more valuable. Whether he kept it or not, I'll never know, but it taught me a valuable lesson! Finding dirt cheap web properties like the one I had sold was something I needed to spend more time learning about, that was obvious! So thats exactly what happened. I continued building ebusinesses from the ground up, and selling them off to investors who were buying them either to flip at a higher price, or keep as long term money makers. But with the money I made doing that, I began buying sites myself!

The REAL money was on this side of the coin. Over the past 3 years, I've been buying and selling websites for profit and making a killer full time income working from home, and it's completely changed my life. And the best part is, the market for valuable websites isn't going anywhere but UP!
